38,387 points - that's how many points Karim Abdul Jabbar scored in his legendary 20-year NBA career. More than any other player in history. He was the NBA's leading scorer for 38 years and it seemed like an unbreakable record. Until it happened.
Many of the greatest players came close to beating the record. Michael Jordan scored 32.3k points but retired early. Kobe Bryant ended his 20-year career with 33.6k points but injuries stood on his way. Karl Malone came the closest with 36.9k points but a career-ending knee injury didn't let him break the record.
Enter LeBron James. The kid from Akron, Ohio was dubbed the "Chosen one" on the cover of the Sports Illustrated as a high school junior. As he took over the basketball world, he went from the "Chosen one" to "the King". After 20 years in the NBA, 4 championships, 2 Olympic gold medals, and countless records, he broke the most difficult of all. On February 7, 2023 LeBron James became the NBA's all-time leading scorer with 38,390 points. With the 38 year old looking in top shape, it looks like James will add to the record in the upcoming seasons.
We don't know what the final record will be, but it looks hard to break. To put into perspective, to break this record a player will need to play 20 years in the NBA, average 26 PPG, and play at least 70 games per season. Maybe this time, it's truly an unbreakable record.
