#3 Twenty years of dominance
In tennis, there are 4 major Grand Slam tournaments: the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Winning one of the titles is considered one of the highest accomplishments in the sport. This past Sunday, Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open and with it, continued the reign of the Big Three for the 20th year in a row.
For the last 20 years, the world of tennis has been dominated by 3 athletes - Roger Federer from Switzerland, Rafael Nadal from Spain, and Novak Djokovic from Serbia. Out of the last 78 possible championships, these three have won a combined 64 times. That’s an 82% win rate.
While Roger Federer retired from the sport last year, the 35-year old Djokovic and the 36-year old Nadal are still dominating the sport despite their age. This dominance was on display during the Australian Open, where Djokovic dismantled all of his opponents and took his 10th Australian Open trophy home.
But who is going to retire with most Grand Slam titles? That’s the biggest question in the world of tennis. Federer retired from the sport with 20 titles, while Nadal and Djokovic hold 22 titles each. Both athletes are getting older, but what this Australian Open showed is that the legends still got it. They are still on top of the sport and we might be lucky to see another year of their dominance. Dominance year 20.
