The story behind my course

After 4 months of taking a break from Substack, I come to you with a special announcement.

I’m launching my first online course. But before I explain what it’s all about, I want to write about the first course I ever took. It happened 13 years ago…

The year is 2010 and I'm a 16-year-old high-school student in Tajikistan. My brother had recently gifted me a laptop, and after playing way too much FIFA, I decided it was time to do more useful things.

I thought ‘Maybe I should take a course’.

My brother is lifelong learner so he had bought himself a bunch of CDs with different courses. One of them was a web development course by a Russian developer Evgeniy Popov.

I barely knew how to type, but I decided to give it a try.

What followed was an intense month of building websites with good-old HTML, CSS & Joomla CMS. The instructor took us step-by-step through the process of building 4 websites of increasing complexity and explained all the concepts along the way.

That course made me fall in love with building and creating websites. I would spend nights and weekends trying to replicate popular Russian and Tajik websites & trying to take on paid work.

But then another lifelong dream came true - I got a scholarship to study in the United States. I switched my focus to get the most out of that experience and slowly lost touch with coding.
